Corporate wellness procurement: buy an outcome you can examine

Estimated 2 minute readFor people directors2 sources

A useful corporate wellness specification defines the change being investigated, the limits of the service and the evidence required at review.

The performance question

Procurement is good at comparing objects that arrive in boxes. It becomes more difficult when the thing being bought is an improvement in how an organisation works. The temptation is to make advisory services comparable by counting workshops, reports or hours. Those are useful descriptions of effort, but they are not the business question. A company can receive every workshop it ordered and remain uncertain about what to do differently. Corporate wellness procurement should define a decision and a method of examining progress, not merely a schedule of activity.

What the evidence supports

NICE recommends a preventive workplace mental wellbeing strategy and evaluation of support. HSE’s Management Standards provide work design areas that can help define a problem. These support a specification connected to actual conditions. They do not establish an approved procurement model or guarantee that an advisory intervention will deliver a particular commercial result. An outcome specification must remain proportionate to what a supplier can influence, particularly when success depends on the organisation implementing changes itself.12

A practical approach

Describe the exposed process, the people involved and the management decision required. Specify the information the provider may access, the engagement expected from leaders and the practical outputs needed. Agree how recommendations will distinguish evidence, interpretation and uncertainty. Include boundaries around clinical advice, confidentiality and employee participation. Define responsibilities for implementation and how the parties will handle a recommendation the organisation cannot currently accept. Compare suppliers on method, relevance and credible limitations as well as price. Do not reward the bidder most willing to promise an outcome beyond its control.

How to review progress

At review, assess the quality of the diagnosis, the usefulness of the decision and whether agreed changes were implemented. Consider supplier performance separately from internal delays or changes in scope. Record what remains uncertain and what evidence would justify further work. A good engagement can identify that the proposed solution was not the right one; procurement terms should allow that finding to be useful rather than embarrassing. Buying corporate wellness intelligently means paying for a clearer account of what should change, not merely acquiring more confident language about why wellbeing matters.
