Hybrid working and corporate wellness: make office days purposeful
An office day has a cost in time and coordination. Its value should come from work that benefits from being together, not simply from being seen.
The performance question
Commuting to an office to spend the day on video calls is an efficient way to make a policy look more important than its purpose. Employees may willingly travel for useful collaboration, learning or a difficult conversation. They are less likely to regard the same journey as valuable when it merely changes the background behind their screen. Corporate wellness in hybrid work should not begin by declaring one location healthy and another unhealthy. It should examine the task, the environment and the practical demands created by the chosen arrangement.
What the evidence supports
HSE guidance on control recommends consultation about work patterns. Its demands standard includes the working environment, while NICE recommends attention to job quality and autonomy. These support discussing how arrangements work for different roles. They do not establish that remote work is always preferable, that office attendance damages wellbeing or that every employee can choose any location. Operational requirements, accessibility, equipment and individual circumstances need a proportionate assessment.123
A practical approach
Identify the work that benefits from shared presence and coordinate it rather than relying on accidental overlap. Check whether employees can access suitable space for focused work and confidential calls. Explain which requirements are necessary for service, training or team coordination and which are open to local agreement. Consult people whose commute, disability or caring arrangements affect the practical experience. Consider the workload of managers coordinating several patterns. A workable hybrid arrangement should reduce unnecessary negotiation rather than requiring every week to be organised from scratch.
How to review progress
Review the purpose and experience of attendance alongside output, coordination problems and support needs. Ask whether employees arrive to find the relevant colleagues and facilities available. Check that remote participants receive important context and development opportunities. Do not interpret visibility as productivity or treat a single satisfaction score as a complete evaluation. The organisation can maintain legitimate requirements while being clear about the value they create. Corporate wellness becomes less abstract when a working arrangement can explain why it asks for a person’s time and what useful work that time makes possible.
